Understanding Scripture with Commentary

Genesis - Chapter 2: The Garden of Eden

← Back to Genesis

Scripture Text

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Primary Commentary

The second chapter provides more detail about creation, particularly the formation of man and woman. The concept of rest here establishes the Sabbath principle and shows God's satisfaction with His creation. This rest doesn't indicate fatigue but rather completion and satisfaction with the work accomplished.
